Citizenship by Naturalization
You can apply for Lithuanian citizenship through naturalization in the following cases:
10 years of continuous legal residence in Lithuania
7 years if married to a Lithuanian citizen
5 years if married to a Lithuanian citizen who is a deportee or political prisoner (or their descendant)
Stateless persons born in Lithuania may also apply
Reinstatement of Citizenship
Persons who held Lithuanian citizenship until June 15, 1940, or their descendants, may apply for reinstatement of citizenship. This applies to those who lost citizenship during the Soviet occupation.
Dual (Double) Citizenship
Lithuania permits dual citizenship in the following 11 cases:
Citizenship acquired at birth (born to Lithuanian parent)
Expelled from occupied Lithuania before March 11, 1990
Departed Lithuania before March 11, 1990
Descendant of a person in cases 2 or 3
A Lithuanian citizen automatically acquired another state's citizenship by marrying a citizen of that state
Adopted by a Lithuanian citizen before age 18 and acquired Lithuanian citizenship as a result
A Lithuanian citizen was adopted by a foreign citizen before age 18 and acquired foreign citizenship as a result
Acquired by exception while being a foreign national (special merit)
Retained or restored citizenship due to exceptional service to the state
Acquired citizenship while holding refugee status
Acquired Lithuanian citizenship at birth and acquired another state's citizenship, not at birth, before age 18
Required Exams
To obtain citizenship through naturalization, you must pass:
Lithuanian language exam — demonstrating proficiency in Lithuanian Need to pass the Lithuanian language exam?
Constitution exam — knowledge of the basics of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania Need to pass the Constitution exam?
Reporting Other Citizenship
If you acquire citizenship of another country, you must report it in writing via MIGRIS using a qualified electronic signature.
Penalty for failure to report: €300 to €850 fine.
