Do You Need to Speak Lithuanian for TRP Renewal in 2026? (Ultimate Guide)

January 10, 20265 min read

If you are renewing your Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) in Lithuania, the rules have changed. The new Law on the Legal Status of Aliens now requires proof of Lithuanian language knowledge for many applicants.

Who Needs the I Category (A2) Certificate?

Starting from 2026, if you have been living in Lithuania for 5 years or are applying for certain types of permits, you must pass the state language exam (I category / A2 level). This is crucial for:

  • Work Permit Holders: Renewing your TRP after 5 years.
  • Service Sector Employees: Direct client interaction often requires A2.
  • Long-term Residents: Applying for permanent residency.

⚠️ Don't confuse this: You do NOT need the Constitution exam for a standard TRP renewal. You ONLY need the Lithuanian Language Exam (I Category).

How to Pass the A2 Exam (I Kategorija)

The exam consists of 4 parts: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Testing Listening

Understanding announcements and dialogues.

Testing Reading

Short texts, schedules, and ads.

Testing Writing

Writing a short request or letter.

Testing Speaking

Simple interview about yourself.
